A2UI: The Interface is Now a Variable
We’re moving past static dashboards and iframes. We explore the A2UI protocol, how models choose their own blueprints, and the future of morphing interfaces.

“I need to see the revenue breakdown for Q3.”
In a traditional app, you click a button, a query runs, and a static chart appears. In an agentic world, you ask the agent, and the agent decides how best to show you that data. It doesn’t just return text; it returns a state.
This is the shift from Fixed UI to Generative UI (GenUI). And the protocol making it safe and native is A2UI (Agent-to-User Interface).
The End-to-End Workflow
How does a thought in a model’s latent space become a pixel on your screen? It’s a four-stage loop that bridges reasoning with rendering:
- Reasoning: The agent determines that a text-only response is insufficient for the user’s intent (e.g., “Compare these three spreadsheets”).
- Intent: The agent selects a UI capability from its toolset—for instance,
render_comparison_table. - Blueprint: Instead of writing HTML, the agent generates a Declarative JSON Blueprint. This describes the what (data and component type) but not the how (styling).
- Render: The client application (your React app) receives the blueprint and maps it to its native component library.
How the Model Chooses the Blueprint
One of the most common questions is: How does the model know which UI to pick?
It isn’t hard-coded logic. It is Semantic Mapping. When an agent is initialized, we provide it with a tool schema. Using MCP, this looks like a set of function definitions, but the “description” field is what gets used.
If the model sees a tool described as “Useful for visualizing high-dimensional trade-offs between stability and performance,” and the user asks, “Is this model safe for production?”, the model’s internal reasoning loop (the chain of thought) maps that request to the semantic description of a Radar Chart blueprint.
In this instance the model isn’t picking a “component”; it’s picking a capability that best resolves the user’s information bottleneck.
Registration & Synchronization
For this to work, the agent and the UI need a shared “dictionary.” We define a Capability Manifest that is registered on both sides.
1. Agent-Side Registration (MCP)
The agent must expose its ability to generate UI as a Tool. Using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the registration looks like this in TypeScript:

When the interface becomes a generative variable, we can build experiences that are impossible to pre-code.
1. Spatial Trace Debugging
Imagine an agent helping you debug a race condition. It doesn’t just show a stack trace. It projects a 3D Logic Map where the “threads” are represented as physical paths. You can see where they collide in real-time. The UI isn’t a chart; it’s a physicalization of the agent’s reasoning paths.
2. Sentiment Control Surfaces
Interfaces usually feel clinical. But a Generative UI can be empathetic. If the agent detects a high degree of uncertainty in its reasoning, the React components might “soften”—using CSS filters to introduce a subtle amber glow, signaling “Proceed with Caution.” When the agent is 99% confident, the UI becomes sharp and high-contrast. The aesthetic is the metadata.
3. Multi-Persona Synastry Maps
In multi-agent workflows (Researcher, Critic, Architect), a static log is useless. A2UI can generate a Synastry Map—a dynamic visualization showing the “tension” between different agentic perspectives. You can literalize the disagreement by showing competing logic nodes pulling against each other on a force-directed graph.
Conclusion
User Interface is no longer a constant; it is a variable determined by the agentic loop.
A2UI, MCP, and React allow us to give agents control over the “How we see” without giving them control over the “What we run.” The future of software is not just talking to a box; it’s the box transforming into the tool you didn’t even know you needed.
